English Accents

It’s not that I’m tailor-made for this job–not an expert still–I learn and teach; I teach and learn, but at least I’m familiar with the IPA symbols and sounds. This helps me apprehend the complexity of this language in particular especially to non-native speakers of English including me.

One day, just came up with a decision that I’m going to follow a certain accent. Not denying it, I also argued with intolerant speakers for being close-minded. They have to know that a learner has a choice to make at the end of the day since both accents are correct.

TWO MASTERS

All my life, I’ve tried not to flout this instilled value thought only relevant to spiritual milieu–no one should serve two masters at the same time–the evil and the good. Now I am caught between a rock and a hard place, a situation that truly rings a bell. I have been working for two masters lately which is very unwise.

So squeezed in between arduous demands from people I call bosses. I just pray won’t end up becoming a two-faced servant–pleasing someone while disliking the other. My instinct is insisting…“Why not when two have completely different intentions!”

INTIMIDATION

My greatest intimidation, which encumbers me from getting my thoughts together, and only writers can relate to, are my readers. While many are quiet bookworms, the rest are strident or censorious or faultfinding–ready to nitpick at all times. Even with simple typographical errors or spacing issues, they’ve got everything to say including disparaging remarks.

At times, readers tend to be the expert in grammar as well. Fortunately, I was taught that writers are no grammarians–we’re creative thinkers. So I’ve learned to listen to “me’’ and to never let their words get under my skin again. No more intimidation!
